ARMADILLOS

I read some where that "Armadillos" in Spanish
means, "little armored ones".   That is easy to
believe.

Where I lived on the west coast they were nowhere
around - at least back then.  But when moving back
here to "God's country" [The Ozarks,] in 1973 I begin
to see evidence of them coming across Texas.  They
were of course an interesting sight to me.  But there
were no armadillos in this area at that time.

But, you know about migration.  They have been
here for several decades now.  In fact I have read
that they are now as far North as Indiana.

They are a rather slow sluggish creature with
very bad eye sight.  However one time I saw
one over in the neighbors hay field in a hurry.
I do not know if I could have caught it or not.

The biggest problem with having them around
is that they are a real problem about tearing up
your yard.  They are after worms and slugs to
eat.  They will sure mess up your fresh mowed
lawn.

The one pictured above and it's three cohorts
were about half grown.  I assume a litter that
still were together.  The interesting thing to me
was that when I was running them off they of
course were irritated.  They were all making a
"humming" sound.  Maybe they were singing
to me.
